Maine: Is it legal to pump your own gas?
Maine allows drivers to pump their own gas. Fire marshal rules cover both attended and unattended self-service stations.
Maine's State Fire Marshal rules adopt NFPA 30A (2008) and add rules for attended and unattended self-service gas stations. Owners must notify the fire marshal before offering self-service. At attended stations, an on-duty operator must watch each fill from a console that can cut power to the pumps, and may oversee no more than 16 nozzles. These are station safety rules, not limits on customers.
What the law says
No one shall construct, reconstruct, convert or alter any service station to provide attended self-service gasoline dispensing without first notifying the Office of the State Fire Marshal in writing of the type and address of the facility.
