50 states · official sources · checked by a person

How the 50 states differ, mapped and sourced.

QuirkMaps maps the rules and quirks that change at the state line, from which pets you can keep to whether you can pump your own gas. Every answer links to the statute, regulation, or agency page it comes from, so you can check it yourself.

How QuirkMaps works

Each topic asks a single question, such as whether you can keep a pet armadillo, and answers it for all 50 states. The answer for every state comes from that state's own law: its statutes, its administrative rules, or the agency that enforces them. Every answer links to its source, so you can read the rule for yourself.

Answers are rated high, medium, or low confidence, and when the law is silent or contradictory we say so instead of guessing. Each record shows the date its source was last checked. Research is AI-assisted and checked against official sources, as the methodology explains. QuirkMaps is general information, not legal advice.
