South Dakota: Is it legal to pump your own gas?

Self-serve allowed

South Dakota allows self-service gas; its state fire rules adopt the International Fire Code, which permits self-service stations.

South Dakota's fire safety rules adopt the 2015 International Fire Code. That code's motor fuel chapter allows self-service stations with an attendant on duty, and unattended stations where the fire official approves them. The state's deletions and amendments do not touch that chapter. This answer is an inference from the code adoption, since no South Dakota rule names self-service directly.

What the law says

The standards of fire safety set forth in the International Building Code, 2015 edition; International Fire Code, 2015 edition; and the International Mechanical Code, 2015 edition; and referenced standards, except as modified, amended, or deleted in this chapter, are the rules of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety authorized by SDCL 34-29B-2.
