Maine: Is it legal to put a train horn on a car?
No state limit found
Maine requires an adequate horn but sets no loudness or type limit; only bells and sirens are banned on ordinary vehicles.
Maine law requires a suitable and adequate horn and bans sounding it unnecessarily. Inspection rules check only that the horn works, is secure, and gives a loud audible sound. Bells and sirens are reserved for emergency vehicles, but no rule found bans whistles, air horns, or train horns. Sounding any horn when it is not needed is still illegal.
Conditions
- Horn may not be sounded unnecessarily
- No bell or siren on non-emergency vehicles
What the law says
