North Carolina: Is there an annual vehicle safety inspection?
Regular safety inspection
North Carolina requires an annual safety inspection before a vehicle's registration can be renewed.
The inspection must be done within 90 days before renewing registration. Historic vehicles are exempt. Laws passed in 2023 and 2026 will drop emissions testing in most or all counties once the EPA approves, but the state environmental agency says the annual safety inspection stays in every county.
