Maine: Do you need an ID to vote?
No ID document required
Maine voters state their name and address to an election clerk. No ID document is required.
The clerk announces the name and checks it against the voting list, and a voter whose address has changed fills out an updated registration first. People registering for the first time, including at the polls, have separate registration requirements, and first-time voters who registered by mail may fall under the federal ID rule. In November 2025, voters rejected Question 1, a citizen initiative that would have required photo ID. No voter ID measure was found on the November 2026 ballot.
What the law says
A voter who wishes to vote must state the voter's name and residence address to an election clerk, who shall announce the name in a loud, clear voice.
