Pennsylvania: Is it legal to pump your own gas?
Self-serve allowed
Pennsylvania rules expressly allow attended self-service gas stations, with an attendant on duty at the controls.
Pennsylvania's flammable liquids rules allow self-service stations that use approved remote-controlled pumps. At least one attendant must be on duty and stay at the control console while fuel is pumped. Pumps not open to the public, such as card or key pumps, need no attendant, and local fire codes can add requirements.
Conditions
- Attendant or supervisor on duty while the station is open
What the law says
Dispensing operations shall be performed only by the attendants or supervisors except at stations approved for operation in accordance with § 14a.115 (relating to attended self-service stations).
