Washington: Is it legal to pump your own gas?
Self-serve allowed
Washington allows self-service gas; its state fire code adopts the International Fire Code, which permits self-service stations.
Washington's State Building Code adopts the 2021 International Fire Code, in effect since March 15, 2024. That code's motor fuel chapter allows self-service stations with an attendant on duty, and unattended stations where the fire official approves them. Washington's amendments do not change that chapter. The 2024 code edition is scheduled to take effect May 3, 2027.
What the law says
