West Virginia: Does the state have a sales-tax-free weekend?

Has a tax-free period

West Virginia holds a yearly four-day back-to-school sales tax holiday around the first weekend of August.

The holiday covers the first Sunday of August plus the Friday and Saturday before and the Monday after; in 2026 that was July 31 to August 3. Clothing qualifies at $125 or less, school supplies at $50 or less, laptops and tablets at $500 or less, and sports equipment at $150 or less. It has run every year since 2021 with no end date in the law. City sales taxes stop too, because state law applies the state's exemptions to municipal sales taxes.

Conditions

  • Friday through Monday around the first Sunday of August
  • Clothing $125 or less; school supplies $50 or less; instructional material $20 or less
  • Laptops and tablets $500 or less and sports equipment $150 or less, not for business use
