New Jersey: Does the state have a lottery?
Yes. New Jersey runs a state lottery that its constitution authorizes and state law governs.
The New Jersey Constitution allows the legislature to authorize state lotteries, with net proceeds going to state institutions and state aid for education. State Lottery Law (N.J.S.A. 5:9-1 to -25) governs how the lottery operates. The lottery now describes its purpose as helping protect public workers' retirement benefits. It sells Powerball and Mega Millions.
What the law says
It shall be lawful for the Legislature to authorize the conduct of State lotteries restricted to the selling of rights to participate therein and the awarding of prizes by drawings when the entire net proceeds of any such lottery shall be for State institutions and State aid for education
