Indiana: Is there an annual vehicle safety inspection?
No safety inspection
No. Indiana does not require safety inspections of private cars; out-of-state cars get an identity check before titling.
Before the BMV accepts a title application, the vehicle must be inspected by a dealer, police officer or BMV employee, who verifies the facts on the application. Cars already titled in Indiana and new cars sold by Indiana dealers are exempt, so in practice this applies to cars coming from other states. The statute lists no equipment checks such as brakes or lights. Vehicles registered in Lake and Porter counties must pass emissions tests.
Conditions
- Identity inspection to title a vehicle not already titled in Indiana
What the law says
