New Jersey: Is there an annual vehicle safety inspection?
No safety inspection
New Jersey inspects passenger cars only for emissions, not for safety equipment.
State law limits inspections of passenger cars and noncommercial trucks to emissions and emission-related items, such as emission controls and on-board diagnostics. That inspection is due every two years, and new cars get their first one after five years. Brakes, lights and other safety equipment are not part of the required check.
What the law says
Passenger automobiles registered in accordance with ... shall only be inspected for emissions and emission-related items such as emission control equipment and on-board diagnostics.
