New York: Is there an annual vehicle safety inspection?
Regular safety inspection
New York requires every registered vehicle to pass a safety inspection once a year.
Cars must also be inspected when ownership changes. Most inspections include an onboard diagnostics (OBDII) emissions check. Vehicles under two model years old, historical vehicles, electric cars and most diesels skip the emissions part but still get the safety inspection.
Conditions
- Inspection every 12 months
- Inspection when ownership is transferred
What the law says
The commissioner shall require that every motor vehicle registered in this state be inspected once each year for safety, and at least biennially for emissions as provided for pursuant to paragraph two of subdivision (d) of this section.
