New Jersey: Where can you buy liquor?
Private licensed stores
New Jersey liquor is sold by privately owned stores holding a plenary retail distribution license; the state does not sell liquor.
A plenary retail distribution license lets a business sell any alcoholic beverage in sealed original containers to take home. Holders may also run consumer wine, beer and spirits tastings under state rules. The state licenses sellers but does not buy or sell liquor itself.
What the law says
The holder of this license shall be entitled, subject to rules and regulations, to sell any alcoholic beverages for consumption off the licensed premises, but only in original containers
