Alabama: Is it legal to pump your own gas?
Alabama has no law against pumping your own gas; its state fire code is the model code that allows attended self-service stations.
Alabama's State Fire Marshal adopts the 2021 International Fire Code and does not exclude or change Chapter 23, the chapter on fuel stations. That model chapter allows self-service if a trained attendant is on duty to supervise, and allows unattended stations where approved. This answer is an inference from the adoption rule, because the model code text was not opened on an official site. Cities and counties may adopt their own fire codes.
What the law says
(1) Except as specifically provided in paragraph (2), the 2021 edition of the International Fire Code® and Appendices B, C, D, E, and M, as promulgated by the International Code Council®, are adopted by reference as a regulation of the State Fire Marshal.
