Alabama: Is there an annual vehicle safety inspection?
Alabama does not require safety inspections for private passenger cars, either regularly or when a car is sold.
To register a car, Alabama requires a title, proof of insurance, and an inspection of the VIN and ownership papers each time the car changes hands. The Department of Revenue lists that check under VIN and ownership documents, and it is not needed at renewal. Alabama has no emissions testing either. This answer is inferred: the Department of Revenue lists its registration requirements, and none of them is a safety inspection.
What the law says
No. Alabama law does not provide for emissions testing of motor vehicles. ... The licensing official or their appointed deputy is required to inspect the vehicle prior to issuing a registration each time there is a change in ownership of the vehicle along with the ownership documentation (bill of sale, court order, properly assigned certificate of origin, or any other documentation as specified by ALDOR). An inspection is not required for a registration renewal.
