Arizona: Is there an annual vehicle safety inspection?
Arizona has no regular safety inspection for private cars; it requires emissions tests only in certain metro areas.
Arizona law defines vehicle inspections that are mainly identity checks matching the VIN to ownership papers. Only the highest level also checks that a car is properly equipped for the road, and it is not a routine requirement for ordinary cars. Emissions tests, every year or every two years, apply to cars registered in parts of Maricopa, Pinal, Yavapai and Pima counties. This answer is inferred from the statutes; no source we opened states outright that there is no safety inspection.
What the law says
A level one inspection consists of matching the public vehicle identification number and a secondary vehicle identification number to the vehicle ownership documents to determine the identity of the vehicle. ... A level three inspection consists of a level two inspection plus verification of vehicle identification numbers on, at the discretion of the inspector, some or all component parts to determine the identity of the vehicle and that the vehicle is properly equipped for highway use.
