Montana: Where can you buy liquor?
Private agency stores
Montana sells liquor through privately owned agency liquor stores under contract with the state, supplied from the state liquor warehouse.
The state Department of Revenue supplies liquor from its warehouse to agency stores, which resell it to bars and the public. Agency stores sell to licensed bars at the state's posted price, but set their own retail price for shoppers and can lose their contract for charging less than the posted price. A person may own only one agency store.
What the law says
The department shall enter into agency franchise agreements to operate agency liquor stores as the department finds feasible for the wholesale and retail sale of liquor.
