New Mexico: Is it legal to pump your own gas?
Self-serve allowed
New Mexico allows self-service gas; state law refers to self-service islands and the state fire code covers self-service stations.
No New Mexico law bars drivers from pumping their own gas. A state statute on help for drivers with disabilities assumes stations have self-service islands. The state fire code adopts the 2021 International Fire Code, whose motor fuel chapter allows attended self-service stations, and New Mexico's rule makes no change to that section.
What the law says
No gasoline station shall display the decal issued by the governor's commission on disability unless it provides full service to any driver with a disability at a self-service island.
